Synopsis "Zeek's Journey to Freedom (in English)"

Born into slavery, at an early age it's discovered Zeek is the grandson of the plantation owner Donald Mathews. Mathews, embarrassed that the boy looks so much like his son, decides to transfer ownership of Zeek and his brother to an old friend in Mississippi. As grown men and still enslaved, 'the boys', as they are referred to, are contracted to work with a crew surveying the Louisiana purchase. They make the trek to Tennessee where they make friends with some young white men. These relationships reshape Zeek's life forever. Zeek's journey takes him through many changes, but of one he's not sure. Will he ever be a free man? None of the events or names in this story are based on real characters. Zeek's Journey to Freedom is my attempt to tell the story of the early journey of slaves to become free.
