The Norse culture is at its height and a new faith is spreading throughout the recently unified kingdom. On a small island in the cod-rich fishing waters off Norway's west coast intrigue is brewing. Followers of Odin and Christian evangelists make strange bedfellows and some leaders want to see their people do more farming and fishing and less raiding. Tensions run high between proponents of progress and staunch traditional. Meanwhile, opposing powers vie for control of the fishing waters and trade routes that supply much of the European continent's food. Against this backdrop Bergljot, the would-be savior of her people and a few close friends try to discover who or what is killing the island's lovely maidens. Is it the gods' retribution, the wrath of the Christian god, the ghosts of dead relatives or some evil conspiracy? The clues mount but a solution to the mystery eludes her. Bergljot is not deterred, even at the risk of her life, her reputation and her future.
