Zur Schaffung weltweit einheitlicher Rechnungslegungsstandards veröffentlichte das International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) 1973 die International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). Einer der Hauptgründe für die Durchsetzung der IFRS ist die im Jahr 2002 verabschiedete EU-Verordnung, welche vorschreibt, dass alle kapitalmarktorientierten Unternehmen ihre Konzernabschlüsse ab 2005 gemä den Vorschriften der IFRS aufstellen müssen. Folglich muss jedes Konzernmutterunternehmen, welches den Kapitalmarkt in Anspruch nimmt, einen Jahresabschluss gemä den IFRS erstellen.
