Die photodynamische Therapie, auch bekannt als PDT, hat sich als vielversprechende antimikrobielle Therapie erwiesen. Enterococcus faecalis ist die häufigste Spezies in Fällen von endodontischem Versagen. Sichere und wirksame Photosensibilisatoren wurden von vielen Forschern zur Photoinaktivierung von Mikroorganismen untersucht. Tannine, aus dem Französischen tannin, sind phenolische Verbindungen, natürliche Farbstoffe, die zu den wichtigsten aktiven Bestandteilen von Pflanzen gehören, was die traditionelle Verwendung von Pflanzen als entzündungshemmende und heilende Mittel rechtfertigt.
