UAVs sind Bestandteil eines unbemannten Luftfahrtsystems (UAS), zu dem auch eine bodengestützte Steuerung und ein Kommunikationssystem mit dem UAV gehören. Der Flug von UAVs kann unter Fernsteuerung durch einen menschlichen Bediener als ferngesteuertes Luftfahrzeug (RPA) oder mit verschiedenen Graden von Autonomie, z. B. mit Autopilot-Unterstützung, bis hin zu völlig autonomen Luftfahrzeugen, die keinen menschlichen Eingriff zulassen, erfolgen.
