À 50 ans, le roi de France, François ler est las de la Belle Ferronnière, la femme de Jean Ferron. Il aime à présent la douce et jeune Gillette. Or Gillette n'est autre que la fille adoptive du fou du roi, Triboulet. Elle est aimée de Manfred, un truand de la Cour des Miracles. Ainsi débute l'aventure... Triboulet, de son vrai nom Ferrial ou le Févrial (1479 - 1536) fut historiquement le bouffon des rois Louis XII et François 1er. Il est le personnage principal de la pièce de Victor Hugo (1802 - 1885), Le Roi s'amuse (1832), qui a ensuite inspiré Francesco Maria Piave (1810 1876) pour le livret de Rigoletto (1851) de Giuseppe Verdi (1813 - 1901).
