Synopsis "Tough Times in Grubville (in English)"
Chet Harbison, a veteran of the Spanish-American War, is now fifty-one years old, and he is seeing the world around him in a free fall to doom. The Great Depression has hit and it has hit hard. Newly earned money from livestock sales is deposited for safety sake in a bank, but the institution soon closes its doors, leaving Chet and his brother Cody searching for ways to save their farms with the county knocking on their doors for overdue taxes.Chet is forced to pin a deputy-sheriff's badge on his shirt and answer to a sheriff with questionable ethics. Soon, the former Rough Rider is investigating cattle thefts, speakeasies, moonshiners, gangsters and the murder of an old friend-all while dealing with a teenage daughter who is growing up too fast for his way of thinking. One of his biggest challenges is adapting to the changing world of modernization, which he has been able to ignore for decades while sheltered in the rural community of Grubville. He is reluctantly forced into having a phone installed at his home and to leave his horse and saddle for a Studebaker touring car that will play a major role in his new law-enforcement duties.
