Zu den bedeutendsten Briefen Theodor Fontanes (1819-1898) zählen die Briefe an die Tochter Martha (1860-1917). Die neu kommentierte kritische Briefedition versammelt erstmals alle nachgewiesenen 180 Briefe Theodor Fontanes an seine Tochter Martha und macht die 90 vergriffenen Briefe der Tochter an die Eltern wieder zugänglich. Der chronologisch geordnete Briefwechsel, dem auch Briefe beigefügt sind, die die Tochter nach dem Tod ihres Vaters schrieb, enthält zahlreiche unbekannte Dokumente, u. a. die vollständigen Nachschriften von Emilie Fontane in den Briefen ihres Mannes an die Tochter, 60 zumeist unveröffentlichte Briefe aus dem familiären Umfeld (zu dem auch Künstlerfreunde gehören), Briefentwürfe des Autors und etwa 30 unbekannte Abbildungen. Der mit den entsprechenden Registern versehene Band wird ergänzt durch ein Nachwort der Herausgeberin.
