Even with a "mere" two billion, that's an average in excess of 55.5 million per page. Atwood distinguishes quips from jokes on the basis of their objectives. The difference between them, he maintains, is that the objective of jokes is to get laughs while the objective of quips is to express opinions. He advocates employing alliteration and rhyme in quips because, they are the "music of language" that increase the likelihood that opinions will make impressions, have staying power and be repeated. For this, he points to Poe. "At the risk of making Edgar Allen Poe groan in his grave...The Raven - "Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered weak and weary" etc. - published in 1845, is arguably the most prominent poem of all time. Yet, stripped of rhyme and alliteration, its' message would have survived, forevermore, as little more, than a famously forgettable rant by a man perturbed by what he thought was a bird." All such words are in dictionaries, of course, but wading hundreds of thousands of definitions in tiny print to find them can be a tedious, tiresome and time-consuming task. Some of Atwood's comments, such as those that follow are likely to elate or irritate.
