Synopsis "The True Story of the Clarks (1837-1955): A Cutlery Village Family (in English)"
The Clark family's story begins with the immigration of John Clark from Liverpool, England and his marriage to Hannah Madigan, an Irish immigrant. Shortly after their marriage in 1866, John Clark obtained employment in a cutlery in Greenfield, Massachusetts and thus began his family's long history in manufacturing silverware. Their quest to find a better way of life led the family to Buckland and eventually to Bay State Village in Northampton, where three generations of the family lived and worked. While the cutlery industry provided John and Hannah with the means to support their family and purchase a home, the culture of the manufacturing village created challenges and hardships for subsequent generations. War, the Depression and personal tragedies continually beset this family. However, their fortitude and strong faith in God enabled them to continue to move forward. The True Story of the Clarks (1837-1955) is an intimate glimpse into the lives and times of one family whose livelihood depended upon a local industry. Their experience was common to millions of immigrants of all ethnicities. The True Story of the Clarks (1837-1955) is told through interviews with family members, photographs, letters, research in public records and local historical accounts.
