Synopsis "The Struggle for the Mississippi: A Diary of My Experiences in the American Civil War (in English)"
At the beginning of the American Civil War, Johann Stuber, a 23-year-old man from Dayton, Ohio, joined the Union Army. He enlisted in the 58th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment.. He was one of thousands of German-speaking Americans who joined in the attempt to reunite his adopted country, a nation torn apart by rebellion. After facing the fury of battle at Fort Donelson, Shiloh, Grand Gulf, Chickasaw Bayou, Port Gibson, and Vicksburg, he spent the rest of the war in garrison and occupation duty at the fallen fortress of Vicksburg on the Mississippi River.
