Licenciado en Filosofía y Letras en la Universidad de Iowa, en 1948 ganó el Premio Pulitzer de teatro por Un tranvía llamado Deseo, y en 1955 por La gata sobre el tejado de zinc. Los críticos del género sostienen que Williams escribía en estilo gótico sureño. Sus personajes se hallan frecuentemente ajenos a los convencionalismos sociales.
