On 6th August 2012, the Curiosity Rover landed on Mars. The following year, Discovery II/c, the first manned mission to the red planet entered Mars orbit. Curiosity’s find on that remote forbidding planet would change the course of human history for ever but would Earth survive that change? The Returning is a science-fiction novel set in an alternative version of Great Britain, one where the Martian invasion of Earth in the last years of the nineteenth century, as recorded by H.G. Wells, actually took place. The attacking Martians had fled Mars having failed to defeat and eject an alien invader from their own planet. As the novel’s two protagonists, Professor David (Dai) Harries, a space scientist at the University of Wales Institute of Science and Technology (UWIST) and Wing-Commander William (Bill) Drummond, a serving RAF fast-jet pilot on loan to NASA soon discover, the force that defeated the Martians is very much alive and intent on abandoning the dying red planet in favour of Earth. The first alien incursions occur not long after Discovery II/c’s arrival back in Earth orbit and before long Great Britain, the chosen arrival point of the alien intelligence, is fighting for its very existence. If you are a fan of traditional science fiction, you will enjoy ‘The Returning’.
