Synopsis "The Qur'an: An Amplified Translation (in English)"
Why an "Amplified" Translation? In order to more clearly clarify words or phrases that may not be readily understood by the reader, we have added definitions following them. This keeps the reader from having to stop and look up words he does not know. It adds to the reading experience without the added effort. For example, in the phrase "Their eyes will be cast down, ignominy [shame, embarrassment, humility] will cover them;" the words "shame, embarrassment and humility" was added in the brackets to expound on the word ignominy, a word not often used in modern language or speech. This is why we label this translation as "amplified." In most circumstances, three or more descriptive words have been inserted with the intention that one of them will resonate with the reader. These inserted [bracketed] words are designed to clarify the meaning of the words immediately before them even though they are not included in the original text. Occasionally, these bracketed words contain information to further clarity the context the passage was referring to. This also helps the reader to get a firmer grasp of what the passage means in relationship to historical events. This "amplification" allows the reader to learn what a term means without having to research it. Of, course, more information is available concerning them, but this gives the reader a quick overview. Other examples will be apparent as the reader comes upon them in the text. While no translation will ever be perfect, because moving from one language to another has its challenges, and it is often nearly impossible to convey traditions, cultural inferences and hidden nuances, but we feel this work does an excellent job of helping the modern-day reader grasp the word of Allah far better than some before it have and still is in keeping with the original meaning of the Qur'an most widely used.
