Raised in the alleys of a gang-infested district of Chicago, among murderous thugs and porch-climbers, Billy Byrne grew up a mucker and a violent hater of law and order. A murder, of which he was accused, but innocent, hurled him into a series of startling adventures on land and sea that rival any that were ever narrated by Jack London or Joseph Conrad. They were the means, however, for giving birth in the mucker to a new and finer regard for the law and for having him meet the one woman who changed the current of his life.
