Pear shaped, blue eyes with black skin, maybe bisexual, maybe agnostic- where does Jasmine fit? Her spiritual stamina and indomitable self awareness have kept this seventeen-year-old from clinging to just any answer to that question. She patiently remains unconvinced of who she is. That is until her home and family change. After moving from Nova Scotia to California she finds out, here in her new home, there is no 'fit, ' no answer, the melting pot is full and considered too exclusive for her. She struggles to accept this but begins to feel vulnerable around groups; her identity search becomes urgent. She tries to avoid others as they are avoiding her, however it is revealed after their 4,000 mile move that Mum is dying soon of cancer, and Mum's last wish is to see Jasmine become a member of an elite high school swim team, an Olympic training ground. Jasmine, a loving daughter, now must break through the barriers of her new school, a high school from hell where physical appearance means everything for success; otherwise if a new girl deviates too far from their standard then suicide is encouraged until it becomes mandatory.
