Pianista y compositor estadounidense John Thompson (1889-1963) nació en Pensilvania. A temprana edad actuó como concertista de piano en las principales ciudades de América y Europa, donde su brillante interpretación recibió muchos elogios. Tras concluir su carrera concertista, dirigió departamentos de música en conservatorios de Filadelfia, Indianápolis y Kansas City. Durante estos mandatos desarrolló ciertas ideas definidas y originales sobre la enseñanza, y en poco tiempo se hizo famoso por sus sinceros esfuerzos por interesar a los jóvenes estudiantes en el pianismo.
