Synopsis "The Life and Times of Thomas Buist (1789-1829) and His Sons (in English)"

Thomas Buist, the fifth child of George Buist and Christian Ballingall did not inherit his father's many lands in Abdie and Kettle Parishes, as he was not the eldest son and heir. However in his early youth he was tutored and well cared for. He worked quite hard as a young married man as a house servant for Mr. David Glass of Smithy Green and later provided well for his wife and eight children while at Feddinch, Cameron Parish, Fife. At Feddinch he rose to become Head Gardener for Mr. William Lindsay, Esquire. There as a senior member of Mr. Lindsay's household, he held a position of responsibility and trust producing the "big house's" fruit and vegetables with his gardening staff. But working outdoors in all weathers was a hard life for Thomas and he succumbed to its rigors. This was a tragedy for both himself and his large family, some of whom emigrated across the world in the hope of a better life. Had he lived, he might have inherited his mother's estate at Kirktonbarns, Forgan Parish, Fife and continued as a gardener but fate intervened and he died at the age of only 40. His sons John, Henry, Thomas, Robert and James Buist were each successful entrepreneurs having their own businesses. Some of the sons left Scotland bound for Canada and the United States. This is their life stories.
