When instead it ruins a holiday party and turns his friend against him, he decides the time has come to return to the sea. But he can't change back into a dolphin this time, and he nearly drowns before being tossed up on the beach near a run-down sea-side restaurant--with a warrant out for his arrest. Julie has always wanted to do the right thing. She works overtime to save her mother's restaurant from bankruptcy. She blames herself when she's rejected by art school. And when she discovers that her wealthy new boyfriend has decided they're engaged, she's certain that must somehow be her fault as well. Trapped on land, Clarence befriends Julie and decides to help her. But when his plan backfires he's carted off in a straitjacket, while Julie prepares for her engagement party. With only hours left, he must discover the secret that will free them both before Julie is pressured into a life she doesn't want and he is locked away in a psychiatric hospital, never to return to the sea.
