The novel is based on the true historical event of the Battle of the North Inch, which took place on St. Valentine's Day in 1396. Scott drew on several sources from the 14th and 15th centuries, including narrative poems by John Barbour and Blind Hary, and historical works by John of Fordun, Walter Bower, Andrew of Wyntoun, and Hector Boece.
