Life apart from her twin, Matilda, isn't easy for Charlotte Lakewood. On the other hand, life wasn't exactly easy with Matilda either. As the "good" twin, Charlotte often found herself falling victim to Matilda's precocious, and sometimes disturbing deeds. Hence, she thoroughly despised getting blamed for Matilda's antics, particularly since it was regularly a challenge to proclaim her innocence to their parents, seeing as Charlotte and Matilda were conjoined. To add insult to the injury, not only were their bodies attached, but so were their minds, permitting the girls to literally control each other's words and actions. Thus, it was always too convenient for the "bad" twin to force the "good" twin to do her dirty work. Upon starting college, Charlotte feels that she is finally free from her sister's clutches. The illusion of freedom is shattered though, when she returns home from school for summer break, only to become the prime suspect in the murder investigation of a young man from their neighborhood named Lenny Jones. Charlotte is widely regarded as the last person to be with Lenny before his death. However, considering she has no recollection of hurting him, and no desire to hurt him, she isn't exactly sure this is the case.
