Synopsis "The Boot Tree: A Chronicle of a Cold War Army Family, 1960 to 1988 (in English)"
David L. Teska's upbringing as an Army "brat" during the 1960s through 1980s serves as the background for this engaging book as he tells the story of how his family, typical of U.S. military families of the era moved frequently from place to place. The Cold War, which lasted from the end of World War II to the collapse of the Soviet Union in December 1991 drove U.S. foreign policy and also motivated U.S. military actions as well. Despite its name, the period was anything but cold with two major wars in Korea and Vietnam leaving a lasting impact on the nation's history. David's family was part of that latter conflict as his mother and two siblings endured two year-long separations during their father's deployments to South Vietnam. And although the family had the good fortune to live in very unique locations over the years - Okinawa, Japan; West Germany, England, and Italy, the reason why they lived there was never far away as David relates in this family memoir.David is a retired Coast Guard Reserve officer with over 30 years of active and reserve service in the U.S. Army and U.S. Coast Guard. He was a Captain in the Coast Guard Reserve at the time of his retirement in June 2015.
