It's her 13th birthday and her illiterate Uncle Jack tells her it's time for her to earn her keep around the house by making men happy. Small Town is part of a child sex ring that's operated by Mr. Boss. Pilar is an innocent child of such activities. All she knows about life is what she reads in fantasy library books and school magazines. She's not allowed to go anywhere, and she can never cross the old bridge to go on the other side of the bayou, except on the school bus. She begins cutting herself to cope at the age of 8. She cut to cope until a girl named Becky took up for her and stood up against her school bullies.
