The book begins by describing a day in the life of an earthworm and all the dangers a creature so small may encounter. It continues by informing us of Gertie's magic powers, how she acquired them, and how she uses them to help others. Gertie manages to get herself into several dangerous, yet humorous situations, but her magic powers enable her to turn into different things, so she always escapes unscathed. This adventure book is the first of a series, and it ends with Gertie getting herself into another jam. The reader will have to wait until book two, to find out how Gertie manages her escape!
