परब्रह्म के द्वारा तीन प्रमुख देवों के माध्यम से सृष्टि की रचना पालन तथा संहार किया जाता है । ये तीन प्रधान देव ब्रह्मा, विष्णु तथा शिव हैं । ब्रह्मा सृष्टि की रचना करते हैं तथा शिव संहार । विष्णु सृष्टि का पालन तथा संरक्षण करते हैं अतः उनका दायित्व ब्रह्मा तथा शिव से अधिक है । अपने दायित्वों का निर्वाह तथा धर्म की रक्षा के लिये विष्णु समय समय पर विविध रूप धारण करते हैं । इन अवतारों का कारण अपने कृष्णावतार में स्वयं वे कहते हैं - 'जब जब संसार में धर्म की हानि होने लगती है और अधर्म का उत्थान होने लगता है तब तब मैं स्वयं जन्म लेता हूँ ।' जब जब संसार मे धर्म की हानि होती है तब तब भगवान विभिन्न रूप धारण करते हैं । उनके अवतारों में दस अवतार विशेष महत्वपूर्ण हैं । इन्हीं दस अवतारों की कथाओं का संग्रह है - 'दशावतार'
