Earth is attacked, and all our spaceships destroyed, except for the Horizon, in deep space on a mission. Captain Alicia is sent to learn the language of the Belcluugs and negotiate peace. But she is kidnapped and taken to their home planet. There she angers the king and he orders her execution. Escaping the City by night, she finds another nation in the forests, and another angry king. Wanting nothing but to escape this barbarian planet where the Horizon has been forced to flee back to Earth, she then realizes that a deadly plague has broken out in both the Nation of the Forest and the Nation of the City. And she is the first victim.
