Historische Soziopragmatik und Historische Textlinguistik werden vom Autor in einem integrativen Ansatz verbunden. Die Darstellung gewährt einen Einblick in das Textschaffen und die Kommunikation einer frühneuzeitlichen Stadt. Texte erscheinen dabei nicht allein als Ergebnis systematischer Typologisierungs- und Klassifizierungsversuche. Vielmehr richtet sich der Blick auf Muster kommunikativen Handelns, die sich im Laufe der Geschichte herausbilden und bewähren. Intendiert ist eine linguistische Konzeption, die generelle Perspektiven der Erforschung einer historischen Kommunikationssituation ermöglicht. Die städtische Kanzlei steht dabei als Ort der Kommunikation im Mittelpunkt. Neben einer Darstellung der gesellschaftlichen, wirtschaftlichen und kulturellen Bedingungen wird durch eine ausführliche Vorstellung der gesamten Textproduktion einer zentralen städtischen Institution zugleich die Entwicklung der deutschsprachigen Schriftlichkeit in einer Stadt des 16. Jahrhunderts sichtbar. Die Untersuchung verwendet dabei ausschlie lich Originalhandschriften als Quellengrundlage.
