Hans-Jürgen Brandt wurde 1931 in Zerbst (Anhalt) geboren und blickt auf ein abwechslungsreiches Leben zurück. Seine Schulzeit ist geprägt vom Weltkrieg und seinen Folgen, und er erlebt das DDR-Regime während seines Studiums und der Tätigkeit als Filmregisseur bei der DEFA. Ein Jahr nach dem Mauerbau flieht er in den Westen, wo er schließlich Professor für Medienwissenschaften wird. Der Autor beschreibt Episoden aus seinem Leben in Ost und West anschaulich und mit Freude am humoristischen Detail.
