Synopsis "Spirit of the Tiger (in English)"

This is a trilogy of 3 loosely linked novellas based on actual events in Singapore. In the first, Spirit of the Tiger, a man uses reason to counsel his gullible community away from witchcraft and the belief that there is a vampire in their village. He has little success especially when he has to contend with his own fears and doubts. The second novella, Rising Son, begins at the outset of the Second World War. An idealistic master and his pragmatic protégé form a resistance group to fight the Japanese. As they set about to recruit more members, they suspect that there might be a traitor in their midst. A murder occurs in the final novella during the courtship of 3 poor sisters by 3 wealthy brothers. Both families refuse to accept that there might be a murderer amongst them. It is then left to a wily inspector to not only reveal the killer but the truth about the families.
