Das Sjogren-Syndrom ist eine Autoimmunerkrankung, die durch eine Entzündung der exokrinen Drüsen gekennzeichnet ist und unter dem Begriff "Autoimmune Exokrinopathie" oder "Autoimmune Epithelitis" zusammengefasst werden kann. Das Hauptziel ist das Tubulusepithel der Speichel- und Tränendrüsen, was zu den charakteristischen Symptomen von trockenen Augen und trockenem Mund führt. Die Exokrinopathie ist häufig umfangreicher und betrifft auch die sekretorischen Drüsen der Haut, der Atemwege und des Urogenitaltrakts, was zu weit verbreiteten klinischen Manifestationen führt. Bei etwa einem Drittel der Patienten treten auch extraglanduläre Manifestationen auf, die durch Immunkomplexe und Vaskulitis vermittelt werden und zu klinischen Merkmalen führen, die den Rheumatologen bekannt sind.
