La sindrome di Sjogren è una malattia autoimmune caratterizzata dall'infiammazione delle ghiandole esocrine, che può essere riassunta con il termine "esocrinopatia autoimmune" o "epitelite autoimmune". Il bersaglio principale è l'epitelio tubulare delle ghiandole salivari e lachimiche, che provoca i sintomi caratteristici della secchezza oculare e della bocca. L'esocrinopatia è spesso più estesa, coinvolgendo le ghiandole secretorie della pelle, delle vie respiratorie e del tratto urogenitale, con manifestazioni cliniche più diffuse. Circa un terzo dei pazienti presenta anche manifestazioni extraghiandolari mediate da immunocomplessi e vasculiti, dando origine a caratteristiche cliniche familiari ai reumatologi.
