Synopsis "Shipwreck in Oman: A Journal of the Travels and Sufferings of Daniel Saunders, jun (Oman in History) (in English)"

THE REMARKABLE ACCOUNT OF THE 18TH CENTURY SHIPWRECK OF DANIEL SAUNDERS ON THE SOUTHERN COAST OF ARABIA. SAILING FROM SALEM, A PORT ON THE NORTHEAST COAST OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN 1791 DANIEL SAUNDERS WAS A MARINER PLYING THE NEW TRADE ROUTES TO THE EAST. Like many from Salem, he must have hoped for fame and fortune. His fame has been more lasting than many of his contemporaries. He had the misfortune to be shipwrecked during the summer monsoon on what is now Oman's southern coast. His good fortune was to survive a 1,000-kilometre walk in the heat of an Arabian summer Local nomads fed him on his journey, and eventually he was rescued and taken to Muscat by some.New to this edition are place-specific modern colour photographs for context and historical images. A brief introduction to the period helps set the scene. This is a remarkable insight into the hazards of 18th-century mariners who, as he described, were sailing seas that were unknown to them. There is plenty of interest in this book regarding - Ships, Arabian Peninsula, Sailors, Shipwrecks, people from Salem Massachusetts, Sultanate of Oman, Maritime History of the USA, 1765-1800 History.
