Synopsis "Scottish Law Role Plays (in English)"

This book is an invaluable resource for students preparing to sit the Chartered Institute of Linguists' Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (DPSI), as well as for anyone interested in Public Service Interpreting and/or Scottish Law. The book contains a collection of 14 role play topics carefully prepared and tested in classroom settings, which should assist students to prepare to sit Unit 1 of the DPSI. In addition, the book should help DPSI and non-DPSI students alike to gain invaluable insight into some parts of the Scottish justice system which they are likely to encounter when working as public service interpreters in legal settings. Some of the areas covered include: - Police station procedure; - Court procedure; - Immigration and asylum; - Antisocial Behaviour Orders (ASBOs); - Drink Driving; - Other offences, such as murder, culpable homicide and breach of the peace. The book also aims to provide a valuable tool for professionals who are new to legal public service interpreting, by helping to bridge the knowledge gap often present in new court and police interpreters with regard to police station and court procedures. The author of the book, based in Glasgow, has more than 20 years of experience working in the language service industry, having undertaken a substantial number of interpreting assignments as a public service interpreter. and translated several million words both into English and Portuguese for many different high profile organisations, such as the European Commission, Scottish Courts and Tribunals Service, Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service, Police Scotland, as well as other public sector and corporate organisations. In addition to being a trained linguist, the author also worked in the language service industry as a senior manager for more than 10 years, where he started getting involved in the development of training packages for interpreters and translators. He has been involved in discussions with many public sector organisations regarding quality standards and professional development of linguists, where he has been a constant advocate of the professionalisation of the public service interpreting profession in the UK.
