Schopenhauer selbst hat zwar den Ausdruck "Biophilosophie" nie gebraucht. Schlie lich gab es die Biologie als eigenständige Disziplin zu seiner Zeit noch nicht. Dennoch nimmt seine metaphysische Welterklärung ihren Ausgang vom Wesen des Lebendigen. Kausalität entschlüsselt sich jedem in der Innenschau als Wille zum Leben. Von dort schlie t Schopenhauer per Analogie auf die ganze Natur. Dabei ist er bemüht, seine Deutung stets mit den Wissenschaften zu vermitteln, im Sinne einer "empirischen Metaphysik". In diesem Buch werden die für Schopenhauer damals für einen solchen Ansatz herrschenden Voraussetzungen umrissen, die aber auch in Beziehung gesetzt werden zu heutigen Auffassungen.
