Mais ist weltweit die wichtigste landwirtschaftliche Nutzpflanze und wird auch in Zukunft die wichtigste Getreideart bleiben. In der Pflanzenzüchtung ist eine der effizientesten Methoden die wiederkehrende Selektion als Strategie zur Erzielung kontinuierlicher genetischer Gewinne. Vor diesem Hintergrund hat das Bundesinstitut für Espírito Santo, Campus Itapina, im Jahr 2014 ein Programm zur genetischen Verbesserung von Mais durch interpopuläre rekurrente Selektion in vollständigen Geschwisterfamilien gestartet. Dieses Projekt ist in dieser Hinsicht ein Pionier und zielt darauf ab, der nordwestlichen Region Espírito Santos in Zukunft neue Interpopulations-Maishybriden zur Verfügung zu stellen.
