Police Chief Jack Conners is admired and respected by everyone in Raleigh. After his wife commits suicide, he lovingly raises their adopted daughter by himself. He is ready to retire and end his unblemished thirty-year career. His daughter Monica is graduating from college and ready to start her career as a high school teacher. She falls in love and marries a former boyfriend who betrayed her in the past. He cheated on her with her best friend and they had a baby together. He becomes a successful attorney and soon realizes his wife has mental problems. Monica tries to manage the roles of wife, daughter, step-mom and teacher and it puts a strain on her already troubled mind. Her father discovers a secret about her and it ruins his life. She manipulates her way through crimes that include the partial blame for the deaths of her own mother and father. These crimes go unsolved and unpunished. Her life spirals out of control. She has a new best friend, who she doesn't trust and a young stepdaughter who doesn't like her. She gets into trouble at the high school, humiliating her husband and almost losing her job. After an altercation with a student and a drunk driving arrest, she realizes she is in desperate need of psychological help. Thankfully, she finds the perfect doctor. With counseling and medication, she believes she is getting well. Her husband discontinues an extra-marital affair and wants to save their troubled marriage. However, there is one crime that Monica will pay for. She didn't actually find her doctor, her doctor found her.
