Als prozesshafte und massgeblich auf Impulsen aus den Regionen beruhende Entwicklung wurde die allmahliche Etablierung des papstlichen Fuhrungsanspruchs im Fruh- und Hochmittelalter bislang vorrangig mit Blick auf die Peripherie Lateineuropas untersucht. Die Studie ruckt dazu hingegen eine zentral gelegene Klosterlandschaft in den Mittelpunkt, indem sie nach den Hintergrunden, Motiven und Folgen der Papstbeziehungen der religiosen Gemeinschaften in den drei lothringischen Bistumern Metz, Toul und Verdun fragt. Der Fokus liegt dabei auf den Funktionszuweisungen, welche diese Gemeinschaften an das Papsttum herantrugen, aber auch auf den verschiedenen Formen ihrer Interaktionen mit den romischen Bischofen und deren Stellvertretern sowie auf der Reichweite dieser Interaktionen in ihrer unmittelbaren und langerfristigen Wirkung.
