Josef Samuelson, Duke of Hildesberg and newlywed, finally has what he has always craved: a family to love and protect and a home in which to do so. Months following the overthrow of the mad Emperor Josef XII, the Empire is still trying to settle down and rebuild. Josef and his kin-bonded friend Jan, Crown Prince of the Empire of the Zauberin, are both newlyweds wanting nothing more than to honeymoon with the women who love them. While Josef takes his new bride back to the mountains of Hildesberg to settle into their new life together, Jan takes up the challenge of learning what he needs to know to assume the imperial crown in a couple of years and how to be a husband to his own wife. Even as the two friends are enjoying their matrimonial bliss, the shadows of a danger foreseen by the assassinated Archpriest of Armacon seem to be creeping closer. Distant provinces fall out of communication, strange messages arrive at the capital and then the senders go silent, and from the previously unknown Draconian Continent comes a dire warning: an ancient enemy long thought routed has returned stronger than ever bent on avenging an ancient loss.
