Aprendió los conceptos básicos de la profesión del mismísimo Christopher Claremont, a quien asistió para X-men. Posteriormente, fue becario en el sello Vertigo de DC Comics. Producto de los acontecimientos del 11 de septiembre decidió ingresar a la unidad antiterrorista de la CIA, en la cual se desempeñó por un par de años, pero cuando se presentó la oportunidad de elegir entre ambas carreras, eligió ser escritor. En febrero de 2016, Tom King firmó un contrato exclusivo con DC Comics y actualmente también trabaja de manera directa con DC Studios.
