During the period before the Great Change, a new nation called Liberation is born within America. In the midst of this, the son of an American billionaire is found guilty of numerous violations in Liberation, resulting in calls for public punishment. His wealthy father swears that no one in the "country of monkeys," as he calls it, will lay a hand on his son, or else they will suffer. Meanwhile, a politician in Liberation who rules the local underworld grows more powerful-and more dangerous. The mayor of Liberation holds the key to keeping his country and America from war, working with America's first African American president. In this suspenseful novel set in an alternate dystopian world, only time will tell whether the two men can work together to bring their nations to peace, or whether their nations' shadows will destroy the countries from within.
