L'an de Rome 687, Aulus Cluentius Avitus, chevalier romain du municipe de Larinum, en Apulie, fut accusé, par Caius Oppianicus, d'avoir empoisonné Statius Albius Oppianicus son père, autre chevalier romain de la même ville. Or, huit ans auparavant, cet Oppianicus père avait été lui-même condamné pour tentative d'empoisonnement contre Cluentius, et il était mort en exil depuis à peu près six ans. Oppianicus le fils, qui accuse Cluentius du même crime pour lequel celui-ci avait fait condamner son père, ajoute à son accusation que Cluentius avait corrompu les juges qui condamnèrent Oppianicus; et une grande partie du plaidoyer de Cicéron est consacrée à réfuter cette allégation, qui n'était pas le fond de la cause, mais qui excitait contre son client les plus fortes préventions...
