The year is 2708 and Janum, raised by monks on a poor planet, enters the galaxy's most elite university to pursue a career in cyberlogic. The institute is located on a mysterious moon called M'Auna, built by an advanced race. Janum excels, earning the admiration of the university's director, Visor Dracon. But he becomes angered by the elitism and self-absorption he finds in the University. Returning from a trip home to the temple on Taruul, he meets Eryon, a lost adolescent suffering from amnesia, and allows him to stay with him. Together they visit Sahrot, the wealthy planet which M'Auna orbits. There, Janum discovers technologies being developed for mind control and advanced warfare. Alarming and complex signals emanating from two stars out toward the galactic rim are soon followed by the outbreak of war between the wealthy planets and poor worlds, propelling events toward an ominous future.
