Synopsis "My Voice of Conscience: Of Gods and Demi-Gods (in English)"
In this book, “My Voice of Conscience: of gods and demi-gods,” Seopaul Singh recounts a partial summary of his life’s experiences, growing up and working in the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, under the dictatorship of L.F.S. Burnham, the self-declared president for life, in a touted “democracy.”In as much as it is an autobiography, it is undoubtedly an historical record of the inner workings and corrupt practices inherent in dictatorships. It touches, also, on the racially biased bases of decision making and the unrighteous and wrongful dismissal of qualified and efficient Government Officers and Public Servants of People of Indian Origin (PIOs) from their official duties and positions. Some were forced to immigrate.It highlights, not only the failure of the Government to prevent corruption at the highest levels, it identifies the cause of the corruption! He is ably qualified to document the issues raised in his autobiography because his life is, inextricably, an integral part of the many atrocities, as a journalist of the many massacres and sufferance meted out to Guyanese nationals, especially to People of Indian origin (PIOs). He treats us with his ability and willingness to confront and unearth fraudulent financial practices and to correct them singlehandedly – thus the title: “My Voice of Conscience: of gods and demi-gods.” His religious foundation, fortitude, and resolve to address the issue of corruption while being employed in a dictatorship did not earn him a Guyana medal, but it should. (Note, however, that many party comrades have received Guyana citations, which citations are recorded in the National Records). Is this culture of corruption to be accepted as the norm? Must the few continue to rule the majority? What an exemplary life, both as a family member and as a citizen of a Nation! From the perspective of Administration in general (and Government Administration specifically), he raises the valid question of Administrative Efficiency. Insidious “party politics,” like a festering wound, undermines, and, ultimately, destroys attempts at efficiency – even if the so-called foreign “experts” are paid huge sums to make governments efficient. Did they address and solve the issue of corrupt Governments in their own home-countries – these “experts”? His book has relevance for a wide reading audience, especially now, since the need for a “New World Order” is imminent in all areas of human endeavor. This “New World Order” must be based upon Governments’ Efficiency and Accountability (E & A). However, this cannot be achieved when a government’s policies are derived from the principle of “paramountcy” of a party or on one ideology.
