The Omchettim had existed for billions of years. They had occupied thousands of planets across several galaxies but no one can survive the end of their universe and now the end was in sight. In a Hail Mary effort that taxed even their vast knowledge they constructed Modai, an AI of such unusual design that it just might survive the end of their universe. Modai remained dormant long after the last of the Omchettim had disappeared and for millions of years more until, finally, the universe accepted the inevitable and ended. Dormant still when there was no time at all, it finally activated when a new universe was born. Its search for intelligent life began and now, more than fourteen billion years later, in a remote backwater of a spiral galaxy it had finally found what it had been seeking.
