Sie ist allgemein bekannt als Bedki, Gymnema, Cowplant, Australia cowplant, Gudmar (Gud-Jaggery, mar-kills), Gurmari, Gurmarbooti, Gurmar (Zerstörer von Zucker), Periploaca of the woods, Madhunashini, Meshasringo, Miracle fruit. Sie wird wegen ihrer antidiabetischen, zuckerhemmenden und entzündungshemmenden Wirkung häufig angebaut (Shah et al., 2013). Die Pflanze ist in den tropischen Wäldern Süd- und Zentralindiens und Srilankas heimisch. In Srilanka ist die Pflanze gemeinhin als Masbedda bekannt. Es gibt etwa 119 Arten der Gymnema-Gattung (Gupta et al., 2012). Sie wird in Malaysia, Srilanka, Australien, Indonesien, Japan, Vietnam, in den tropischen Wäldern Zentral- und Südindiens und in China weit verbreitet angebaut.
