Let's go back to the early days and share the lives of a couple before and during the siege of Atlanta during the Civil War. This amazing journey of strength, determination, faith and discovery uncovers the pioneering days of Atlanta as it grows from a backwoods town to a Southern stronghold. A special message to my readers: This story began as an exploration of my past. My mother used to tell me about my great-grandmother's birth on the Savannah River around the time of the Civil War, which captured my imagination. Curiosity about family letters and photos led to days of flipping through card catalogues, spinning through microfiche rolls, and painstakingly pouring through old newspapers. My research took me to the Georgia Archives, Oakland Cemetery, Atlanta History Center, Augusta Historical Society, Maryland Historical Society and small towns in the Southeast, where along the way I found and used portions of Thomas Maguire's farm journal, John and Mary Mecaslin's letters, and John Mecaslin Harrison, Sr.'s articles published by the Atlanta Historical Bulletin.
