Synopsis "Marriage Contract (in English)"

Marriage is so important to each one of us. It is the one chance we have for happiness regardless of our potential or desire for wealth and fame. We know from all the examples of success and failure from our acquaintances and the media that we have as good a chance of success as anybody. But, everything we know about how to behave in a marriage comes from watching our parents or watching television. In the old days marriage had an economic basis. The man plowed the fields or went to work in the office and the woman stayed home and raised the children, kept the house, and fixed the meals. This was wonderful. Everyone knew their duty. Sadly, it was also a trap. The man needed the woman's help and the woman needed the man's help. It was better to be in an unhappy marriage than to be on your own, or so it seemed. Times have changed. With modern appliances and changing times, everyone knows how to cook (or microwave a frozen meal). It does not take much time to clean (and there are fairly affordable maid services). There are schools for the children. Both men and women work and are not economically dependent on the other. No one has to stay in an unhappy relationship. So, the divorce rate has gone up, but people still look for happiness and get married. Are there good rules for living with another person or is it just luck? There ARE rules on how to behave. The teachings of Jesus give us the Natural Laws of Human Behavior which, if followed, allow the individual to have the best quality of life given their situation. This book tells us how to behave in a marriage, not based on our parent's lives, but as God teaches us to behave. Note that the teachings of Jesus apply equally to both sexes. There are no personal pronouns (he or she) in this book.
