1949. In an Italian coastal village, Marcello Romero, the son of a poor fisherman, dreams of the beautiful Elena Gamboccini. His chances of getting her first date, when up against Armond Cessero, the son of the ice-cream magnate, are slim. Nevertheless, Marcello follows the village tradition and tries to find a gift for her father in an attempt to win his daughter's hand.
