Synopsis "Life at Stalag Luft I: WWII POWs-Grace in Adversity (in English)"
This is a record of 13 months in a German POW camp during World War II, illustrating a phenomenal grace under pressure. Stalag Luft I (short for Kriegsgefangenen-Mannschafts-Stammlager-Luft) was one of nine German POW camps for Allied airmen during World War II in addition to the Dulag Luft interrogation center. The camps were run by the Luftwaffe independently of the German Army. At the time of its liberation by Russian troops in May 1945, nearly 9,000 men were incarcerated at Stalag Luft I alone. The International Red Cross gave blank diaries to POWs to use as they pleased. Many completed ones were later confiscated by the Germans. This one, which was saved, conveys a precious story of courage and humor and grace. It tells the story of life in the North 1 Compound at Stalag Luft I from April 1944 to liberation in May 1945 from the point of view of 2nd Lt. Delbert "Del" W. Chase, who was a Bombardier on an Allied B-17. The book includes: - Bio of the author- Description of the B-17 Flying Fortress- Selected pages from Missing Air Crew Report (MACR) 3677 for Del's B-17, including a list of the crew- Story of Del's capture, interrogation, and subsequent transport to Stalag Luft I- Description of the camp- Maps of the north and south compounds of the camp- Day-to-day description of life in the camp- Over three dozen drawings, most in full color, by Del and his fellow prisoners, along with other illustrations- Numerous illustrated poems, all by POWs- Recipes used by the prisoners- Post card to Emily Post asking about dining etiquette- Sample page from "POW WOW" (Prisoners of War Waiting on Winning), the camp newsletter- List and signatures of many of Del's fellow Kriegsgesfangenen (War Prisoners) and where to find online memorials to them- Glossary
