Thirty-year-old Bear considers his adoptive father, Reverend Clay, a hero until the older man falters. Clay is stabbed in a robbery and entrusts his son to assume his place on a high profile political junket. Bear is tricked out of his seat by a political hack; the jet explodes on takeoff with no survivors. Bear realizes that his father was behind the blast and uncovers the underbelly of the beast his father created: the New Century Zealots. No one yet realizes Bear is still alive until a domestic terrorism investigator turns up knowing that Bear is the missing man from the doomed jet. He blackmails Bear into teaming up to get evidence against his father. The elder Clay discovers his son is alive and conjures a plan for them to take over the unstable cult. Bear accuses Clay of stabbing himself to escape being a martyr. Clay realizes that Bear is now a liability. Michael English Bierwiler is a prolific Texas novelist.
